The Law Harshly Punishes Those Who Violate Young People
In Texas, “sexual assault of a child” is the official name for a crime more commonly known as “statutory rape.” In other words, any sexual contact with a person under the age of 17 can be considered a form of sexual assault by someone at least three years older than the young person in question — even when the younger person has expressed his or her consent for a given sexual activity. This law is based on the premise that children under the age of 17 are too young to give meaningful, legally significant consent for sex with an older partner. Sexual assault against a child also meets the broader definition of sexual assault when sexual contact occurs without one party’s consent.
As an experienced sex crimes defense attorney, I can help you face any charges related to sexual contact with a minor. The law is designed to protect children, but in some cases it can be overprotective and lead to legal problems for well-meaning people. I have worked with clients who have been outright falsely accused of sexual assault, as well as those who acknowledge a romantic relationship with a younger partner that they did not realize violated the law.
Legal Support For A Wide Range Of Sex-Related Charges Involving Children
In addition to the laws regulating direct sexual contact with children, young people are also protected by related restrictions against activities including:
- Indecency with a child, such as nudity
- Child pornography charges, including possession and distribution
- Solicitation of a minor via online communication tools
