Contact A Houston Lawyer For Skilled Embezzlement Defense

I’m R. Todd Bennett, former Harris County prosecutor and board-certified* criminal defense attorney. I understand that suddenly being faced with accusations of embezzlement can be deeply upsetting to those who have spent their entire lives building a reputation of trustworthiness, reliability and honesty. In these situations, I use my more than 25 years of legal experience and background as a prosecutor to give you the powerful defense you need when you future and your reputation are at stake.

I welcome your inquiry by phone at 713-489-7763or by email.

What Is Embezzlement?

Embezzlement involves the use of (legally obtained) property in any way other than its intended purpose.

Federal courts use a different term – deprivation of honest services – to refer to embezzlement-related situations. Although the terminology is different, the severity of the charges and the potential ramifications remain the same and you should seek experienced defense counsel as soon as you are able.

What Alleged Actions Lead To Embezzlement Charges?

Charges for embezzlement typically stem from allegations of:

  • Fraudulent accounting practices
  • Falsification of financial documents
  • Misuse of company funds
  • Accounting fraud
  • Credit card fraud
  • Making illegal payments
  • Falsifying documents related to company financials, including submitting a false time sheet or reimbursement request

All too often, these and other perceived misdeeds lead to embezzlement investigations out of nothing more than a misunderstanding. What a prosecutor may view as an illegal activity may simply be the normal business practice for the industry and the prosecutor just does not understand how the industry works.

I have stepped into numerous investigations and helped clients show that their actions were not carried out with criminal intent, that no money ever flowed to their own pockets, or that they were not involved in any wrongdoing.

When Should I Contact A Lawyer?

It is to your advantage to contact me — call 713-489-7763 or send an email to request a free consultation — as soon as you believe you are under investigation for embezzlement. As a Houston embezzlement defense attorney, I can provide you with the guidance and advice that you need to navigate through embezzlement investigations and potentially keep charges from ever being filed. By drawing on my experience in this complex area of law, I know how to work with supervising prosecutors and investigators and show them that my clients’ conduct does not constitute embezzlement.
