The long-term impact of protective order violations on your future

On Behalf of R. Todd Bennett, P.C. | Mar 20, 2025 | Domestic Violence |

Violating a protective order, often issued in domestic violence situations, carries immediate legal consequences, such as potential jail time, fines and a criminal record. However, the problems do not end when the case closes; they can follow you for many years.

Employment challenges

When you apply for jobs, most employers conduct background checks, and they will see if you have violated a protective order. Many may not hire someone with this mark on their record because it can suggest anger issues or an inability to follow rules. You might lose your current job too, especially if it requires a clean record.

Housing limitations

Looking for an apartment? Landlords may screen potential tenants for criminal histories. When they see a protective order violation, they might worry about safety and rule-breaking. They could deny your application, forcing you to look in areas with fewer rental options or lower-quality housing.

Losing time with children

If you have kids, a protective order violation can severely limit your parenting time. Judges see these violations as red flags about your self-control and respect for rules. They might reduce your visitation or require supervised visits only. Depending on the severity of the violation, you could face significant restrictions to your custody rights.

Career license issues

Teachers, nurses, lawyers and certain other professionals need licenses to work. Licensing boards take protective order violations very seriously. They may suspend or even revoke your license because these violations suggest you might not be trustworthy or safe in your professional role.

Financial setbacks

Beyond paying fines and legal fees now, you will face ongoing costs. Insurance companies may charge you more. Banks might deny loans. With fewer job options, your earning power drops too.

Social stigma

Friends, family members and neighbors often look differently at you after you have violated a court order. They may distance themselves, unsure if they can trust you or worried about your judgment.

The importance of legal guidance

The complicated nature of protective orders means that even accidental violations can trigger these serious consequences. Getting proper legal support early helps you understand your rights and options when facing such challenging situations.
