Texas moves forward with crackdown on paper license plates

On Behalf of R. Todd Bennett, P.C. | Feb 18, 2022 | Criminal Defense |

In Texas, vehicle license plates are necessary to ensure that the automobiles are registered, people pay various fees and those who might commit serious crimes are identifiable through their automobile information. However, some have been accused of taking advantage of the Lone Star State’s use of paper license plates and committing violations ranging from relatively minor to major. Anyone who is caught in a recent crackdown on paper tag violations should be aware of the potential ramifications. Understanding the details of the aggressive policing is imperative when forging a defense.

Paper tag abuse sparks “Tag, You’re It” campaign in Texas

A crackdown is underway to catch those who have fraudulent tags. While this strategy is understandable in a legal sense, it can also lead to people who might not have wittingly done anything wrong being arrested and charged. The paper tags are meant to be temporary, but there was a problem that allowed people to create their own tags that would be used to misidentify vehicles. The fraudulent tags let vehicles hit the road even if they should not have been. The continuing violations led to “Tag, You’re It” – a campaign to take these vehicles off the streets and catch those who are using illegal paper tags.

Frequently, people purchase the vehicles unaware that there are emission flaws that would otherwise remove the vehicles from the market. The targets are generally those who are providing the fake tags. Still, anyone who has a fraudulent tag is vulnerable as part of this crackdown. The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) has been vigilant in this endeavor for nearly a year. In that time, there were more than 2,100 people cited and 110 arrested. With this a primary concern for the state, it is important for those who are arrested and charged to know what they should do if they are accused of wrongdoing.

After an arrest for vehicle violations, the penalties can be surprisingly problematic

Depending on the allegations and the circumstances, people can be confronted with serious charges for crimes they may not even have been aware of. This often impacts those who have never been in any trouble with the law and are fearful and unsure of what steps to take in the aftermath. Before saying or doing anything, it is imperative to understand the value of a strong criminal defense. This is especially true when law enforcement is specifically pursuing a certain category of crime as they will try to maximize the number of arrests they make. The entire case must be analyzed to determine the preferable strategy. Having representation is vital from the beginning.
