Domestic violence among myriad of charges facing Gholson man

On Behalf of R. Todd Bennett, P.C. | May 19, 2017 | Domestic Violence |

Those charged with criminal offenses such as domestic violence in Houston may believe the penalties that they may face will only be those singularly linked to the crime they are accused of. However, if the circumstances surrounding a case lead law enforcement officials to believe that multiple crimes may have been committed in a single encounter, then one could legitimately face a myriad of charges whose legal consequences could potentially be stacked on top of each other.

A Gholson man appears to be learning this lesson the hard way after he was arrested on accusations of domestic violence. The man’s wife was found with severe bruises and swelling to her head and body, which she claims resulted from the man hitting and kicking her repeatedly. She even claims the incident escalated to the point of her husband threatening to kill her.

Following his arrest, the man was charged with several offenses on top of the assault. Due to this not being the first instance of violence between the two, he was charged with continuous violence against a family member, along with family violence in violation of a protective order (the wife claimed to have tried to end the marriage weeks before). He was also charged with unlawful restraint and possession of a firearm by a felon. All told, the several bonds held against him total more than $550,000.

One accused of assaulting another in a similar fashion to that which was described above will almost certainly face criminal penalties. However, he or she should still be protected from any unwarranted charges. Having an attorney on one’s side during such an episode may help ensure that he or she is treated fairly despite whatever stigma his or her alleged crime may carry.
