Man pleads guilty to drug charge, sentenced to 25 years in prison

On June 9, news sources in Texas reported that a 38-year-old Bryan man was sentenced to 25 years in prison in connection with the most recent felony charges against him. According to sources, the man had been charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance following a raid on his home on July 11, 2014. The Bryan Police Department narcotic officers who executed the search warrant found about 200 grams of methamphetamine, an undisclosed amount of cocaine and two firearms in that raid.

The man had previously pleaded guilty to a drug charge stemming from a 2011 traffic stop. After pulling the man over for speeding, a Texas Highway Patrol trooper found about seven grams of cocaine, small baggies, scales and a handgun in the man's possession. He was later sentenced to seven years probation for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance. The man's history of prior convictions also includes driving with a suspended license, possession of cocaine, assault and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

In addition to the 25-year prison sentence for the drug trafficking charge, the 2014 offense resulted in a revocation of the man's earlier sentence of probation and a new sentence of 10 years in prison for the earlier conviction. Additionally, the man received sentences of 10 years in prison for each of the two unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon charges. By law, all of the sentences will be served concurrently.

In Texas, penalties for the manufacturing, trafficking or delivery of illegal substances can be very harsh. Individuals who find themselves facing such charges may find it beneficial to discuss with a criminal defense attorney the strategy that might be employed at or before trial to help mitigate the charges or their consequences.
