How do hackers break into computer systems?

On Behalf of | Aug 3, 2017 | Criminal Defense, Theft & Property Crimes |

Hacking is a crime that was made popular by TV shows and the growth of the internet. It is any unauthorized intrusion into a network or a computer, whether it belongs to the government or a private party.

To hack a network or computer, the hacker uses one of several techniques to alter systems or security features. By doing this, he or she can access items and accomplish goals that are not the intended purpose of the system.

What are some kinds of hacking?

There are a number of types of hacking. One kind of hacking is password cracking. This is when a person recovers passwords for data that is stored or sent via digital communication pathways. For instance, a hacker may use a password cracking tool to get into a celebrity’s private emails.

Another kind of hacking technique is releasing viruses. Viruses are self-replicating programs. They insert copies of themselves into executable code files, which disrupts the system, destroys documents, hijacks files or achieves other goals. Many viruses are spread through emails or other downloadable files.

One other kind of hacking technique you may have heard of is a key logger. Simply put, a key logger remembers every keystroke you make when you type. Whether it is credit card numbers or passwords to your email accounts, the key logger captures every stroke. That information is then stored and sent to the hacker for his or her own purposes.

What happens if you’re accused of hacking?

Breaking into another person’s network is against the law. Hackers face penalties just like any other person who commits a crime. Those who commit internet crimes could face fines or prison terms depending on the case. It’s important to defend yourself if you’re accused of hacking, because the penalties you face could be severe.
