What are the different types of identity theft?

On Behalf of R. Todd Bennett, P.C. | Apr 6, 2017 | Theft Charges |

As technology becomes more and more prevalent in people’s lives, crimes like identity theft have been on the rise in recent years. Identity theft is taken very seriously in Houston, and can sometimes lead to lengthy jail terms, exorbitant fines and other penalties. Additionally, there are many different types of identity theft, as illustrated by the items below.

According to TheBalance.com, theft of one’s driver’s license can result in a number of negative consequences. This type of theft occurs as a result of a stolen purse or wallet, which then gives others access to your sensitive information. In many cases, the person in possession of your license will use it to apply for other forms of ID, which can then be used to commit further fraud. Theft of a driver’s license can also be linked to criminal identity theft, which is when a person assumes another’s identity in order to avoid legal reprisal for criminal wrongdoing.

Financial identity theft is also exceedingly common. This type of theft happens when your financial information (such as bank accounts) is breached. As a result, thieves can rack up thousands of dollars in charges before the victim is aware of what’s occurring. Financial identity theft is usually the result of hacking, wherein a person accesses personal information via computer.

Even children can become the victims of identity theft, and may not even realize there is a problem until many years later. Kids are a prime target of identity theft for this very reason, and accordingly these types of crimes are becoming more and more frequent as a means of evading punishment.
