Police watching for intoxicated drivers as holidays near

On Behalf of R. Todd Bennett, P.C. | Nov 18, 2016 | Drunk Driving |

With the rise of the annual office party and an increased number of people traveling to spend the upcoming holidays with family, it should come as little surprise that Texas law enforcement, specifically law enforcement agencies in North Texas, are looking to crack down on intoxicated drivers during the holiday season.

From those Thanksgiving Day beers during the game to the extra glass of eggnog at your work holiday party, there are plenty of opportunities to imbibe (and over consume) during the upcoming holiday season. Those who do, however, could pay a steep price for their partying.

The holidays go hand and hand with over-consumption

Between holiday parties at your place of work with open bars to the desire to dull your Aunt’s post-meal commentary with an extra gin and tonic, there are plenty of opportunities for individuals to consume more alcohol than they should during the holiday season.

Far too many people ring in the new year by getting into their vehicle and trying to drive home after an evening of drinking. Between a desire to celebrate and the highly questionable but common social practice of using alcohol as a means to tolerate family get-togethers, the social pressure to drink is high during the holidays.

Holiday enforcement can ruin the season

There’s no faster way to ruin your New Year, your Christmas, or your Thanksgiving than by being caught up in a multi-county enforcement effort to deter, catch and penalize drunk drivers. Not only can the costs associated with a drunk or drugged driving charge eat up your entire budget for presents, it can result in the loss of your job or even incarceration.

If you or a loved one has been cited, charged or arrested for intoxicated driving in Texas, you should contact an experienced defense attorney as soon as possible. Working with an attorney is the best way to minimize the impact of those charges.

Even first time DUI offenders lose big

A drunk driving offense is no joke in the state of Texas. In addition to being subject to arrest, fines, incarceration, and loss of their driver’s license, those who are caught and charged for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other incapacitating drugs can be required to install a ignition interlock system in their vehicle.

These systems test for the presence of alcohol before the vehicle can be started. They can be expensive, not to mention embarrassing. While they may be court ordered for first time offenders, they are mandatory for those who are facing DUI charges with one or more similar offenses on their records.

Call an attorney if you’re facing drunk driving charges

Between the financial and social costs of a conviction and the ongoing consequences of losing driving privileges, a drunk driving offense can irreparably alter the course of your life. The best way to protect yourself, your future and your family is to contact an experienced defense attorney with a history of working with those charged with drunk driving offenses in Texas.
