Fatal alcohol-related accidents and Uber

Texan Uber patrons may be interested in research that shows that fatalities related to drunk driving have not actually decreased since the service's inception. University of Southern California and Oxford University researchers examined highly populated metropolitan areas in the United States, and they compared fatal accident data before and after Uber debuted on the market. It was found that Uber and similar apps had no effect on the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

In a 2015 blog post, Uber announced hopes that the service would reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents on the road. The new 2016 study casts doubt on those aspirations. Another 2015 study showed a correlation between a decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities, but the study had several flaws. One flaw was the fact that the study only focused on Uber services and their impact among California drivers. Another flaw was the study's failure to account for other intervening factors, such as changes in drunk driving legislation.

The authors of the 2016 study separated the total fatalities related to drunk driving from holiday and weekend accidents. In neither case was there a direct correlation between a reduction in deaths and Uber services. The authors speculate that many intoxicated drivers may not want to pay for an Uber ride since the likelihood of being arrested for driving while intoxicated is low.

From drug charge defense to DUI cases, a criminal law attorney may be able to provide assistance to those accused of committing a crime on the road. Traffic crimes can carry long-term legal and financial consequences for the accused, so presenting a strong defense is crucial. An attorney may be able to argue for a reduced or overturned charge for someone who was accused of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
