A man has been sentenced to prison in East Texas in a case that some have described as unusual. The convicted man, a Nigerian immigrant to the United States, had allegedly been working as a professional witch doctor and sorcerous consultant to drug cartels.

Texas traffic stop leads to drug charges

A traffic stop performed by an officer with the Texas Department of Public Safety led to an apparent drug seizure on Sept. 23. The driver of the vehicle that was pulled over, a 58-year-old Paradise Valley, Arizona, man, was taken into custody. He subsequently appeared in a federal courtroom in Amarillo where he was charged with drug possession with the intent to distribute.

Pilot accused of drug possession on Houston-bound flight

A federal judge in Texas released a 49-year-old airline pilot charged with drug offenses on $50,000 bond after the man allegedly flew from Colombia to Houston with 62 bags of cocaine in his stomach. Officials said the pilot for a local regional airline was in uniform when he boarded the flight as a passenger. He then called police for assistance after his flight landed and one or more of the bags containing cocaine pellets broke in his stomach.

Drug charge defense might depend on police dog

A narcotics task force operating in Texas has made a significant financial impact on groups and individuals committing drug offenses in the area. Officials reported that a task force composed of personnel drawn from local and federal law enforcement agencies seized more than $386,000 in less than a month. The police attribute the money to drug trafficking in the region.

Man turns himself in after Texas drug raid

A Graham man turned himself into law enforcement on May 1 following a drug trafficking sting in North Texas two days earlier, according to the Young County Sheriff's Office. Police said that the April 29 sting in the Dallas area involved arrest warrants for 30 suspects, 26 of whom were detained as a result of the sting. The Graham man was one of four people for whom police were still looking after the raid, police said.

Texas woman arrested in drug sting

A Texas woman who pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver was sentenced to 10 years in state prison on Feb. 5. The woman, 38, was ordered to pay $390.50 in court costs and another $140 in restitution. She had pleaded guilty on May 6, 2013, after she was arrested for delivering hydrocodone, a painkiller, to someone in Childress.

Man gets 10 months for marijuana possession

A Texas traffic stop has led to a 10-month prison sentence for a 22-year-old man for alleged drug trafficking. The accused was pulled over by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper in Van Zandt County in March 2013 for speeding. During the stop, the trooper reportedly detected the scent of marijuana. According to police reports, the trooper found nearly 4.5 kilograms of marijuana on the back floorboard as well as a loaded .40 caliber, semi-automatic pistol on the floor of the front driver's side of the car.

Big drug conspiracy criminal case in East Texas

The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas has announced the indictment of 28 individuals allegedly operating a major drug distribution ring trafficking cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine through the district to Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and beyond to New Jersey and New York. A federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment charging them with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute one or more controlled substances. State and federal investigators then executed arrest warrants on 23 of the 28 indicted defendants.

Odessa trucker facing prison sentence for secret cargo

A 37-year old truck driver from Odessa, Texas, could be spending the next 10 years sitting in a prison cell instead of the cab of his truck following his guilty plea to drug delivery charges. The defendant was caught as a result of an investigation led by law enforcement agencies from several states and the federal government into a drug smuggling operation with ties to Mexico.According to the charges, the defendant transported legitimate cargo across the country; however, cocaine was hidden in his truck on trips from Arizona to Ohio. Cash from the sale of drugs was hidden in his truck for the return trip to Arizona. The trucker's secret cargo caught the attention of law enforcement when he tried to recruit another driver to work with him. The other driver soon became an FBI informant.
