Man taken into custody on drug charges in Texas

Authorities say that they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside of a home belonging to a 47-year-old man on Jan. 3 in the Houston County city of Crockett, . Police first made contact with the man during a traffic stop and executed a search warrant after finding probable cause to suspect that he had large quantities of drugs inside his residence.

After discovering methamphetamine and paraphernalia inside of the home, the man was taken into custody. He was charged with felony drug possession and sent to a Houston County jail. There were no details available as to why police suspected that he may have been storing illegal substances in his home. Somewhat ironically, he was wearing a T-shirt that had references to methamphetamine when he was taken into custody.

Individuals who are charged with drug possession may face several penalties if convicted of the crime that could include incarceration, fines and probation. However, first-time offenders or others charged with less serious drug crimes may be allowed to enter a diversion program. If successful, the charge may be dropped and expunged from that person's record. Those who are charged with a drug crime may wish to talk to an attorney about how to dispute the charge.

One possible defense strategy could be that the defendant had a medical reason to be in possession of the drug. Another argument could be that the drugs in the defendant's system were the result of secondhand smoke or touching a surface with drug residue on it. This may make it possible for the defendant to have his or her charges dropped or win a full acquittal if the case goes to trial.
