Teacher and husband detained in drug case

A 29-year-old Texas science teacher and her 33-year-old husband are facing multiple charges for allegedly possessing and distributing drugs as part of an ongoing investigation. The two were detained on Sept. 12 after a SWAT team and a special investigations unit deployed by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office went to the couple's apartment with a search warrant. Only the woman's husband was home at the time, and police later took her into custody at the school where she taught.

According to police, they found suspected methamphetamine at the apartment as well as marijuana, a loaded shotgun, prescription medication and ingredients for date rape drugs. Authorities also claim that the science teacher had recipes for date rape drugs in her backpack when she was detained.

The man is charged with one count each of aggravated possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance as well as a count of felon in possession of a firearm. The woman is charged with possession with intent to deliver or manufacture a controlled substance.

Due to the seriousness of a drug charge, the individuals may wish to work with an attorney on a defense. One thing an attorney might look at is the procedures for obtaining the search warrant and detaining the two individuals. For example, if officers lacked probable cause to search the premises, the case may be dismissed.

If the charges are not dismissed, individuals in similar situations may have a few options to consider. For example, one may testify against other individuals potentially involved in exchange for leniency in court. Some sort of plea deal may be available that allows a defendant to plead guilty to some charges in order to receive lighter sentencing.
