Police seize alleged "purple drank" from Texas home

On Sept. 16, police raided the home of two people in Sherman after reportedly being granted a search warrant to look for drugs. The 27-year-old man and 24-year-old woman were reportedly sleeping when the Sherman Special Response Team entered their home and confiscated 1.5 gallons of a suspected drug mixture called Purple Drank. Police also seized five ounces of suspected methamphetamine, $2,200 in cash and alleged drug paraphernalia.

Each of the accused individuals were detained and charged for multiple drug offenses. Two days later, the accused woman had reportedly been released on bond while the accused man remained behind bars at the Grayson County Jail.

According to narcotics officers, the quantity of Purple Drank that was found at the residence was unusually large. The mixture of codeine and promethazine has an estimated street value of between $380 and $500 an ounce, making the alleged amount seized worth approximately $25,000. Following the incident, a local pharmacist told a news reporter that the Medicine Shoppe in Denison provides prescription holders with the same drug mixture about twice a week. She commented that her pharmacy would sometimes receive calls asking what color codeine and promethazine mixture they sold.

A person who has been charged for drug possession may have a better chance of receiving leniency from the court if they held a valid prescription at one point in time. An attorney may be able to help present evidence that establishes how the defendant developed a chemical dependency after a medical doctor failed to properly monitor them while the drug was being prescribed.
