Theft charges target bass fishing competition director

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2013 | Theft & Property Crimes |

A Texas man who directed the 2012 Big Bass Mania fishing tournament at Lake Sam Rayburn was recently indicted on charges brought against him by state organizations. The theft charges allege that the 44-year-old man was involved in an unconfirmed failure to pay promised cash rewards associated with the event. It is unknown if someone involved in the tournament initiated these complaints or whether this arrest was the result of an independent effort on the part of law enforcement officials.

Officials did not publicly specify the award amount that was purportedly stolen by the accused man. They also failed to release a statement detailing the existence of any evidence indicating that he was at fault. Nonetheless, the man was detained without bond at Jasper County jail in early September. According to jail records, he did not have an attorney at the time of his arrest.

The arrest was performed by Texas game wardens who were working with state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission enforcement personnel from Florida. Although investigators pointed out that the accused man came from the vicinity of Bryan-College Station, they say that he maintained a residence in Florida at some point. Officers failed to indicate the man’s original hometown.

Theft charges can make things extremely difficult for an accused individual. Even when people end up beating the accusations against them, the defamation that they publicly suffer could make it difficult for them to maintain their current social status. Public opinion may preclude them from being awarded specific employment opportunities in the future and make things difficult for their family members. Criminal defense lawyers may be able to help these individuals negotiate deals that reduce their charges in order to decrease the burdens experienced by their families.
