2 facing charges for 272 pounds of marijuana

On Nov. 1, Texas authorities reported that 272 pounds of marijuana was found during a traffic stop in Hidalgo County. According to the criminal complaint, a state trooper conducted the stop at about 5:46 p.m., pulling over a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that had windows that were tinted more than the legally allowed 25 percent.

The trooper said that the driver, identified as a 33-year-old Bishop man, appeared nervous and did not consent to a search of the truck. During a subsequent record check, the trooper reportedly found that the man's license was suspended. As a result, the trooper took the driver into custody. When the truck was undergoing inventory, authorities found 27 bundles of marijuana in a toolbox in the bed of the truck.

Further, the 35-year-old woman who was sitting in the passenger seat was also taken into custody. Both the driver and the passenger were charged with possession of marijuana. The man was released from jail several days later while the woman was still in jail when the report was released.

The state of Texas is known to be particularly tough when it comes to marijuana charges. Those who are facing felony charges could be at risk for being sentenced to years in prison, probation and a criminal record that could make it difficult for them to further their education or obtain employment. In some cases, a criminal law attorney may launch an independent investigation into the charges to determine if the authorities failed to follow proper procedures. The attorney may also determine if there are defense strategies that may reduce the potential legal consequences or even work to have the charges dismissed.
