Drug ring takes small town by surprise

Authorities in a small Texas city say that a meth ring there is acting as a source for students to get the drug. Two people who were believed to have supplied the meth to a third person were taken into custody on Sept. 28. Authorities say that they gave meth to that person who then sold it to students in the area. The reactions to the drug ring and possible student drug use were mixed.

Football players at Devine High School said that students are expected to experiment with drugs and that it shouldn't be seen as a big deal. Coaches for the football team had no comment while a former student at the school said it was shocking that something like that would have happened so close to home. Officially, the Devine Independent School District would not confirm that any students were involved.

Individuals who have been charged with drug possession or other drug crimes may be facing a lengthy stay in jail or prison if convicted. It may also be possible to be put on probation or required to do community service as part of a sentence. In addition to legal penalties, it may be harder to get a job or go to school with a prior conviction on a person's record. Therefore, it may be best to consult with an attorney after being charged.

Legal counsel may be able to create a defense to the charge such as that a controlled substance wasn't intended for sale. It may also be possible to assert that a person was using or selling a controlled substance against his or her will. That may be enough to help a defendant get a favorable outcome.
