40 arrested during heroin and meth investigation

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration have had a busy summer arresting drug-trafficking suspects. Their latest round of raids on properties throughout San Antonio produced 15 arrests and seizures of heroin, methamphetamine, weapons and cash. A DEA spokesman said that the five-month investigation had so far resulted in the arrests of 40 people.

Among those who have been taken into custody, authorities listed a 45-year-old man with a previous drug conviction as the lead defendant. Agents allege that he bought 1 kilogram of heroin.

Earlier in the summer, investigators searched an apartment on Huebner Road and reported finding 5 gallons of methamphetamine solution in addition to heroin. Law enforcement described the property as a conversion lab where liquid methamphetamine is processed into crystal. According to the DEA, the liquid form represents a method that Mexican drug cartels use to transport the substance into the country. Smugglers hide it in gas tanks or other containers meant for liquid. The 15 men taken into custody in the latest round of arrests remain in jail awaiting bail hearings.

A person arrested because of accusations of possessing, manufacturing or distributing drugs could ask an attorney to develop a drug charge defense. To protect the person's rights, an attorney might study the evidence to see how strong it is and if the criminal charges actually fit the evidence. Charges in excess of what the evidence can support in court might be challenged by an attorney, who could ask for a reduction of charges. The circumstances of a search and seizure might also be scrutinized by an attorney in an effort to remove evidence from a case.
