Drunk driving arrest of TV journalist in Texas makes news

A 32-year-old woman employed as an investigative reporter for KENS-TV in San Antonio became the subject of media reports after a May 28 arrest for alleged drunk driving. The report filed by a Hill Country Village police officer described her as driving a vehicle erratically on U.S. 281 North. After she failed to use a turn signal, the officer pulled her over. Other officers from the local jurisdiction also arrived on the scene.

Law enforcement administered a Breathalyzer test, which produced a blood alcohol level of 0.20. This figure approaches three times the legal limit for operating a vehicle. Because the sobriety test read above 0.15, authorities charged the woman with a Class A misdemeanor for driving while intoxicated. A conviction could result in fines and up to one year in prison.

Before joining KENS-TV, she worked at a 24-hour international news station and the Associated Press. A statement from her current employer said that disciplinary actions were pending a complete review of the incident.

In addition to leading to criminal penalties, a drunk driving arrest could jeopardize someone's job. Individuals in this position could reach out to an attorney for help. A DUI defense might be developed by an attorney after reviewing the circumstances of the traffic stop and the performance of law enforcement during the sobriety test. Any problems with equipment or procedural shortcuts could empower the attorney to challenge the validity of the blood alcohol reading. Another defense strategy could be to offer atonement by attending an alcohol treatment program or safe driving course. These tactics could control penalties and help the person avoid imprisonment.
