Police say accused drunk driver tried to take officer's Taser

A 35-year-old man in Texas was handed several charges after allegedly trying to assault an officer during a traffic stop on Oct. 21. The man was detained in El Paso just before 2 a.m. after a DWI Task Force officer allegedly noticed he was speeding in a 2000 Acura TL. According to authorities, the accused man was traveling 66 mph in a 50 mph section of northbound Zaragoza Road.

The officer that made the stop claimed that the man appeared to have been driving while intoxicated. During the incident, the accused man allegedly acted confrontational with the officer. The man is accused of trying to punch the officer and attempting to take the officer's Taser weapon. Police say that the man was in possession of four packages of cocaine when he was detained.

The man was booked into El Paso County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated, possession of cocaine, resisting arrest and taking or attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer. Bond was set at $160,200 in the man's case. There were no reports about whether the man had any prior DWI or cocaine charges on his record.

A person who has been charged with a DWI may be able to negotiate a plea deal with the prosecution. In many cases, a DWI defendant can have charges like resisting arrest dismissed if they plead guilty to a drunk driving charge. However, if the evidence of drunk driving is weak, an attorney might advise a defendant to refrain from entering a plea deal.
