19-year-old man accused of sexual assault of 15-year-old girl

Authorities have detained and charged a 19-year-old Texas man for the sexual assault of a minor. An arrest affidavit lists the minor as a 15-year-old girl who the Williamson County Sheriff's office interviewed in August 2016 as a reported runaway. It is unclear, however, whether the man and girl were together while the girl was a runaway.

In the affidavit, the girl claimed that the man had intercourse with her even though she did not want to. The man reportedly denied this, telling an interviewer on Sept. 28 that the girl is his girlfriend and that he was aware of her age. He also acknowledged in the affidavit that he and the girl engaged in sexual activity at least 10 times with her consent at his mother's house in Round Rock.

Police booked the man at Williamson County Jail and charged him with second-degree sexual assault of a minor, which is a felony punishable with up to 20 years in jail. A judge set his bail at $50,000. Due to a previous assault charge, court records indicate that the man has a bond forfeiture pending as well.

Sexual assault charges can have serious consequences for defendants who are facing previous assault charges. However, defense attorneys might be able to get the severity of the criminal charges reduced along with the severity of the penalties through negotiations with the prosecuting attorneys.

Defense attorneys for defendants of criminal charges such as sexual assault might also be able to get the charges dropped by presenting evidence that their clients are innocent. In cases similar to the one involving the Round Rock man, attorneys might enlist the help of private investigators to prove that both parties consented to having intercourse.
