Police say accused drunk driver tried to take officer's Taser

A 35-year-old man in Texas was handed several charges after allegedly trying to assault an officer during a traffic stop on Oct. 21. The man was detained in El Paso just before 2 a.m. after a DWI Task Force officer allegedly noticed he was speeding in a 2000 Acura TL. According to authorities, the accused man was traveling 66 mph in a 50 mph section of northbound Zaragoza Road.

A biosensor device to prevent drunk driving

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nearly 90,000 people across the U.S. perish from alcohol-related causes annually. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that almost 10,000 of those fatalities occur in drunk driving accidents. Texas motorists may be interested to know that there is a device that has been developed that can help curtail the drinking habits that can contribute to chronic health issues and vehicle accidents.

Simple Assault Charges in Texas

There is nothing simple about simple assault. If you've been charged with simple assault in Texas, you face potentially serious consequences. Assault seems like such a loaded term, but under Texas law it can mean "intentionally or knowingly" threatening someone with bodily injury, rather than actually touching them. Texas statutes break assault into several categories, with the particular form of assault considered either a misdemeanor or a felony. It is crucial to contact an experienced criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible.

ACLU report finds many drug users serve long sentences

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, drug laws in Texas and other states are doing little to discourage drug use. In fact, such use has remained steady for decades despite strict laws on drug use and possession. The ACLU found that in 2015, four people were detained for drug possession for every one person taken into custody for distribution, and nearly 50 percent of those cases dealt with marijuana. The ACLU has produced a report arguing that people are serving long sentences for minor drug crimes. The organization favors decriminalization, education and harm reduction over using law enforcement resources to find and jail drug users.

19-year-old man accused of sexual assault of 15-year-old girl

Authorities have detained and charged a 19-year-old Texas man for the sexual assault of a minor. An arrest affidavit lists the minor as a 15-year-old girl who the Williamson County Sheriff's office interviewed in August 2016 as a reported runaway. It is unclear, however, whether the man and girl were together while the girl was a runaway.
