Minor league baseball player charged with family violence

On Aug. 4, a minor league baseball player in Texas was handed one charge for misdemeanor assault family violence. The 22-year-old Corpus Christi Hooks outfielder was charged for an incident with his girlfriend that was caught on camera on Aug. 2. The Hooks president said that Major League Baseball placed the accused man on administrative leave after learning about the criminal case.

The alleged family violence incident was captured on surveillance footage at Whataburger Field. A male employee at the stadium approached Hooks officials and told them that the accused man had threatened him. When the officials reviewed surveillance footage, they saw the accused man strike his girlfriend in the face three times on a stairwell. Two of the slaps knocked the woman's glasses off, and one slap caused her to fall down the stairs.

Hooks officials contacted the Corpus Christi Police Department and told them about the footage. On Aug. 4, police spoke with the man's girlfriend and videotaped her giving a statement while a bruise was still visible under her left eye. Later the same day, the accused man was detained after a family violence detective executed a search warrant. He has since been released on $10,000 bail.

A person who has been charged with domestic violence may want to speak to an attorney about defense strategies. An attorney will review the evidence that is being used against the defendant in order to determine how strong the prosecution's case is. If the evidence does not adequately demonstrate that domestic violence took place, an attorney may help the defendant argue that the alleged victim made false accusations.
