1 dead in alleged drunk driving crash, driver charged

On Aug. 14, a 25-year-old Texas man was accused of causing a car accident that caused the death of a 27-year-old woman. Authorities stated that the accident occurred in the 2700 block of South Gessner near the Westheimer intersection in west Houston.

The man was traveling north on South Gessner in a Toyota Camry. At approximately 3 a.m., the man allegedly veered across the median. He allegedly overcorrected, causing the vehicle to hit a stop sign. The collision caused one of the passengers to be thrown from the backseat of the car. She died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

Field sobriety tests that were taken at the scene showed that the accused man was intoxicated when the crash occurred. He was taken into custody at a later time before being charged with intoxication manslaughter. It was not stated if the driver or the other passenger suffered any injuries associated with the crash.

People who have been handed drunk driving charges could potentially be facing a jail sentence, fines and other severe consequences. As a result, they may want to contact a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible so that a strategy can be constructed to attempt to combat the charges. One such tactic could be to challenge the results of a breath test on the basis that the machine had not been properly calibrated. If it is a first offense, an attorney may also look into negotiating a deal with the prosecutor that would tie a plea of guilty to a lesser penalty such as completion of an alcohol awareness class.
