1 dead in alleged drunk driving crash, driver charged

On Aug. 14, a 25-year-old Texas man was accused of causing a car accident that caused the death of a 27-year-old woman. Authorities stated that the accident occurred in the 2700 block of South Gessner near the Westheimer intersection in west Houston.

Minor league baseball player charged with family violence

On Aug. 4, a minor league baseball player in Texas was handed one charge for misdemeanor assault family violence. The 22-year-old Corpus Christi Hooks outfielder was charged for an incident with his girlfriend that was caught on camera on Aug. 2. The Hooks president said that Major League Baseball placed the accused man on administrative leave after learning about the criminal case.

Family Violence vs. Domestic Violence in Texas

Domestic violence and family violence are very similar crimes. However, Texas law does draw some distinctions between the two offenses. Domestic violence typically involves violence between two adults who are married to one another, whereas family violence covers violence among any of a wider group of people.

8 people named in drug trafficking indictment

On Aug. 3, FBI agents and local authorities in Texas apprehended seven people who are suspected of drug trafficking. The defendants were detained in El Paso County, and they range between the ages of 25 and 68 years old. A 35-year-old man who is suspected of being involved with the same alleged drug trafficking operation was previously detained in June.

Fatal alcohol-related accidents and Uber

Texan Uber patrons may be interested in research that shows that fatalities related to drunk driving have not actually decreased since the service's inception. University of Southern California and Oxford University researchers examined highly populated metropolitan areas in the United States, and they compared fatal accident data before and after Uber debuted on the market. It was found that Uber and similar apps had no effect on the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
