Bust of Texas theft ring yields 130 arrests

The Houston Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in the area took action to bring down a large group of organized thieves that had been plaguing the community. Police arrested 130 people who allegedly participated in the theft of small trailers.

According to information obtained during the year-long investigation, the thieves would scout around Houston and nearby cities looking for covered or uncovered trailers. They referred to this activity as "going shopping." When they spotted an unattended trailer, they hooked it up to a truck or van and drove away with the contents. Investigators said that the group did not appear to have a clearly defined leadership. The alleged thieves operated as a loosely affiliated network. Group members hid the trailers and stolen merchandise on the properties of their friends and family members.

Authorities filed over 200 charges against those arrested, and they continue to look for more suspects. Among those arrested, 76 lived in Houston. Most of the crime ring's members appeared to be from the east side of the city.

People who have been accused of theft crimes face serious consequences if the prosecution is able to obtain a conviction. These could include incarceration as well as restitution. Their future job prospects could be bleak with felonies on their records. As a result, it might be advisable for those who are in this type of a situation to enlist the assistance of a criminal defense attorney as quickly as possible. The strategies used to combat the charges will depend upon the circumstances of the case, including the activities of authorities at the time the defendant was taken into custody.
