Texas man facing murder charge after family dispute

Houston police have reported that a 29-year-old man was taken into custody on April 3 after a family dispute turned deadly. The man is alleged to have shot the boyfriend of his child's mother several times after he became embroiled in an argument with the woman. The incident took place outside the home of the child's mother in northeast Houston at approximately 8:00 p.m.

According to a detective, the altercation began when the man went to pick his 2-year-old daughter up from her mother's home. An argument that became physical is said to have taken place in the driveway, and reports indicate that the woman's boyfriend intervened to break up the quarrel and shepherd the woman and child back inside the residence. The man is said to have become enraged by this intervention, and police say that he shot the woman's boyfriend multiple times in the back using a handgun that he had retrieved from his nearby parked car.

Police say that the man then placed his infant daughter in his car and left the scene. The vehicle was found abandoned close to a church about a block from the shooting. The child's mother gave police information that was then used to locate the man. Reports indicate that the man was taken into custody without incident and the child was returned to her mother unharmed. Authorities say that an Amber Alert was not issued because the man had not previously harmed or threatened the child.

Criminal defense attorneys may appreciate that family violence often has deep roots. Those charged with acts of domestic abuse sometimes lash out only after resentment has festered for months or years, and defense attorneys may bring this to the attention of prosecutors as they seek to have charges reduced during plea negotiations.
