NFL quarterback facing domestic assault allegations

Police in Texas have stated that a case of domestic violence involving NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel has been referred to prosecutors. The Dallas police made the announcement on the department's blog on Feb. 25. The investigation into Manziel's conduct was initiated after an incident involving the former Heisman Trophy winner and his 23-year-old girlfriend on Jan. 30.

According to a police report, Manziel's girlfriend claimed that the football player grabbed her by the hair and threw her into a car following a quarrel. The woman says that Manziel then struck her about the head causing one of her ear drums to rupture. She also says that she struck Manziel several times during a violent struggle during which she feared for her safety. The woman also said in a sworn statement made two days after the alleged attack that Manziel had fled the couple's residence when the argument continued to escalate.

The Cleveland Browns first round draft pick and former Texas A&M standout denied the incident when questioned by reporters, but it was not the first time that Manziel had been asked awkward questions about his conduct. The 23-year-old signal caller was in trouble with the law on several occasions during his college years, and he entered treatment for drug and alcohol abuse in 2015 when his behavior began to worry members of the Browns organization.

The publicity surrounding this case shows how stories involving domestic assault charges often tell only one side of the story. Criminal defense attorneys with experience indomestic violence cases will likely understand that recollections can be unreliable when emotions run high, and they may point out that establishing proof beyond a reasonable doubt could be difficult for prosecutors when the only witnesses to an incident give different accounts of what transpired.
