Driver with a 15-foot tree stuck in grille charged with DUI

Texas residents may have heard about a suspected drunk motorist who was driving around the area of Roselle, Illinois, with a 15-foot tree protruding from the front part of her car. The incident occurred on Jan. 23 around 11 p.m.

According to the report, another motorist alerted police to a vehicle that was traveling down the roadway with a 15-foot tree hanging out of its front grille. When local police responded, they spotted the vehicle being driven by a 55-year-old woman. When they requested the woman to pull over to the side of the road, they said her car's front airbags were deployed and that she smelled like alcohol. Police claim that she confessed to striking the tree in a nearby town. After the woman performed poorly on a field sobriety test, she was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence.

Driving while intoxicated can be punishable by incarceration, steep fines, or a driver's license suspension or revocation. If convicted, people will have a criminal record that can have a detrimental impact on their future.

Those who find themselves in similar circumstances may benefit by retaining a criminal defense attorney who has experience in DUI cases. There are a variety of defense strategies that could possibly be employed. For example, the attorney could question the results of a field sobriety test if the defendant failed it due to a prior medical or physical condition. If it was the defendant's first offense, the prosecutor might agree to waive more serious penalties in exchange for the defendant to successfully complete an alcohol education course and perform community service.
