It was reported on June 9 that a Houston FedEx driver was being investigated by police after she claimed that her vehicle was carjacked. According to the report, more than $20,000 worth of merchandise that was being transported by the truck was stolen in the alleged incident.
The woman reportedly told officers that she was carjacked on May 27. She claimed that the carjacker forced her to driver around for approximately 45 minutes before she was forced to exit the vehicle. The carjacker allegedly made off with the vehicle and the merchandise inside, which reportedly included a pair of Nike Air Jordan’s that were not available for purchase at the time the vehicle was allegedly stolen.
An anonymous tip led the police to the woman’s boyfriend, who told the investigators that she had staged the robbery and asked him to drive the vehicle. He stated that he sold the Nike shoes for $325 each. Police were able to recover the stolen vehicle with $15,000 worth of shoes still inside. The woman was ultimately taken into police custody. It was stated in the report that she was facing criminal charges, but it was not known what those criminal charges were.
Those who are facing charges for theft crimes may also be facing serious penalties should they be convicted. Depending on the severity of the charge, the accused person may be facing a jail sentence and probation in addition to having the charge on their permanent record, which could make it difficult to obtain employment later on. An attorney may be able to provide a strong defense for their client, depending on the evidence the prosecution has against them. For example, the attorney may be able to negotiate a plea bargain that reduces the severity of the consequences.
