When Do I Need A Lawyer?

Criminal/Grand Jury Investigations

If you are the subject or target of a state or federal criminal investigation but have not yet been charged by a grand jury, you may be asking yourself whether you need a lawyer. The answer to that question is "absolutely." This is no time to sit back and hope that the investigation will go away.

I'm R. Todd Bennett, a Houston criminal defense lawyer. I represent people facing serious criminal charges ranging from federal drug charges and sex crimes to white collar crimes such as fraud. I provide representation during FBI, Texas Grand Jury, and other state and federal investigations.

If federal agents are investigating your conduct, you need a lawyer with extensive experience in the federal court system, and you need that lawyer immediately. U.S. sentencing guidelines are harsh and can be confusing both to defendants and to lawyers who are unfamiliar with federal court practice.

In my criminal defense practice, I have had many dealings with federal prosecutors. I have more than 15 years of criminal law experience, as a defense attorney and as a prosecutor. I will conduct my own investigation of the case against you and communicate both with law enforcement agencies and the federal prosecutor who is overseeing your case. I will evaluate facts and make a judgment on when it is in your best interest to cooperate with the government and when it is best to remain silent.

In some cases, it will be in your best interest to cooperate with investigators. However, only an experienced lawyer can manage your cooperation to protect your interests.
