Texas DWI arrests remain high during Labor Day enforcement period

During certain peak travel periods, law enforcement agencies will ramp up their DWI patrols statewide in Texas. The most recent campaign was an 18-day period that finished on Labor Day weekend, and led to many individuals being arrested for DWI within the state.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, there were nearly 1,700 arrests for DWI from August 16th through September 2nd. The Texas Department of Transportation had awarded grant money to various police departments in the state to increase the number of officers on patrol during this particular enforcement period.

When motorists are stopped for DWI or approaches a sobriety checkpoint in Texas, they may not know what to expect. They may never have had any prior issues with police, and will be uncertain about what they should do. They could make costly mistakes that result in much easier cases for prosecutors.

Motorists need to be aware of their rights when they are under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. They may refuse to participate in field sobriety tests, but, police will still be permitted to continue with their investigations. This could lead to officers making an arrest, and requiring the individuals to undergo a blood or breath test.

If motorists refuse these tests, they will face the immediate suspension of their driving privileges. Texas has very strict rules regarding implied consent, which means that anyone driving on its roads agrees to submit to these tests when requested by a law enforcement officer.

The penalties for a DWI conviction can range, depending upon the circumstances present at the time of the stop. Individuals involved a high blood-alcohol content or injury-causing accidents could see much stronger punishments in place. First-time offenders could be facing jail time, as well as fines and costs associated with license reinstatement.

There are potential defenses that may be available to individuals charged with DWI, but this will require a careful analysis of the facts present in each case. If you have been arrested for drunk driving, it is important that you contact an experienced criminal defense attorney before making any statements to police.

An attorney can ensure that your rights are protected at this time, and can help you understand the consequences of a conviction. Many people will panic and plead guilty just to put the matter behind them, completely unaware of the impact that this will have on their lives.

Do not make this mistake, as any subsequent convictions will only add to the penalties that may be handed down. You have options available to you, and it is important that you defend yourself against these allegations.
